Rummaging through some old stuff I stumbled upon a flash grid I build out of straws a couple of years back.
My interest in photography has evolved over the years. For the last couple of years been focused on flash and studio photography.
Placing a grid on a flash will focus the light which is useful in many situations.
The build is quite simple and the pictures should be sufficient guidance. It is important to use black straws as to not contaminate the colour of the flash light. At the end before/after pictures are showing the effect of mounting the grid on the flash.
Cut the straws to length.
Glue the lengths of straw into a grid matching the size of the flash head.
Cut a piece of foam long enough to reach around the flash head and thus alto the newly glued grid. The piece must be wider than the lengths of straw to allow mounting on the flash head.
Make angular cuts on each end of the foam to increase glueing area.
Super glue the foam into a tube.
Insert the straw grid into the foam tube. The fit should be perfect so no glueing is needed. If not some extra straws can be added to the grid.
The grid is finished and can be mounted on the flash.
